Blessing Rituals
Blessing rituals may be conducted at construction sites to pray for the safety of the workers and smooth progress of the project. There are many types of ritual that may be conducted at such sites, such as spiritual purification of the area, ground breaking ceremony and ritual, blessing for the workers, seventh month prayers, etc. Rituals may also be conducted before renovations or when a company relocates to a new factory or site.
Numerous hotels, amusement parks, apartments and dormitories requested for such prayers in their premises or guest rooms. The rituals will be conducted privately away from public eyes and will be kept strictly confidential. Some of these requests are usually made after reports of spiritual disturbances by guests or deaths. In such circumstances, salvation rituals for the deceased may be recommended.
Ground Breaking Rituals
Ground breaking rituals, known as “dong-tu” ritual (动土科仪), are recommended for construction of new buildings or permanent structures. An auspicious time and direction will be advised and a ritual will be conducted to pray for the safety of the workers and also for smooth operations of the company or business.
Some factories in Singapore may also set a small shrine (or altar) at the workplace for their workers to pray for safety and blessings. These includes factories with higher risks in the production and workers will usually offer incense to the deities for blessings before and after work. =)
Salvation Rites
Salvation rites, also known as Chao-du (超度/超幽) rituals, are conducted for those who had departed and also for the ancestral spirits. Such rituals are presided by high priests to preach to the departed, refine their true form, and save them from sufferings.
Q. When should such rituals be conducted?
A. Salvation rites may be conducted for a family or loved one who had passed away. It is recommended for those died due to illnesses, accidents, especially those who died by committing suicide. The grievances and sufferings may be addressed, and the priests will pray for the sins and wrongdoings to be pardoned.
Rituals may be conducted during:
(a) Every 7th day after the death till the 49th day.
(b) 100th day after the death.
(c) 1st year, 3rd year anniversary, etc.
The salvation rituals are especially helpful for those who committed suicide or any of the “violent” (or unfortunate) deaths, including illnesses, sentenced to death, etc.
Temple Celebrations
Many types of rituals may be conducted at temple celebrations. A complete ritual will include both “yang” (blessing) rituals and “yin” (salvation) rituals during the celebrations, known as “fa-hui” (法会) or “jiao” (醮). Popular rituals includes the Li-dou (礼斗) ritual for blessing and praying for longevity and good health. The rituals are believed to be able to eliminate misfortunes and avoid unfortunate incidents. Repentance rituals (拜忏) are also conducted during such celebrations to reflect on our own actions, and seek the heavenly deities for forgiveness if we did something sinful or bad.
House Prayers
House prayers remain one the most popular requests. From new flats, pre-owned flats, condominiums, to landed properties, rituals may be conducted to bless the owners and occupants of house. Many requested Master Chung to visit their homes and conduct a blessing for them annually during the first lunar month (Chinese New Year period).
New Flat: Owners of new flats, usually young couples, would request Master Chung to select an auspicious day to move into the new flat and also for advice how to organize the space. Some will also request for an altar to honour a deity in the house for protection and blessings, and some may want to display religious or auspicious objects to ward off evil or bring in good luck. A ritual will be conducted at the flat on the selected date and Master Chung will lead the new owners in a simple ‘house entering ceremony’, followed by a blessing ritual.
Pre-owned flats and apartments: A common question in the minds of buyers who purchased pre-owned units – any unpleasant event occurred in the house? Not just loan shark activities, but if there was any suicide or murder (or any unpleasant incident) which occurred in the premise. A purification rites and blessing will be conducted before moving into the unit, and you will have a peace of mind staying there.

Master Chung,
I have some general quiestions about placement of Tu Di Gong in my Household. I have already had him Kai Kuang and was thinking about moving him from the front room of my house to a room in my house that I was going to set up for the altar; as I am thinking of adding other deities in the future. Can you please tell me if there are any strict rules for placement of Taoist altar and which items should be there on the altar.
Thank you,
Will
